What to Expect During Your Design Project

As the project to create your beautiful room gets underway, it is helpful to know what to anticipate along the way.  As you probably can guess, the aesthetic of your room is just the beginning of what it actually takes to create your masterpiece.

You can count on your designer to achieve the vision of your room and walk you through this complex process in a friendly, supportive and knowledgeable manner.  You and your designer are collaborators and partners in the journey.

It is important to point out that while your designer will be recommending a variety of products and services, in the end, you are always in control.  No one will enter your home, make any changes, place orders or make purchases without your understanding and approval.  You will always be the person who makes the final choice. At no time will anyone be imposing actions upon you.

Once you have agreed upon the scope of work with your designer, and the products and services the project will entail, a deposit will be made and work will commence.  In the beginning, many operations essential to the project will be happening in the background.  Your designer will be:

  • Researching furnishings, fabrics, paint, lighting and accessories

  • Setting up a schedule for the sub-contractors assigned to help

  • Writing work orders for custom draperies and items to be purchased

  • Arranging and orchestrating the flow of the project

  • Looking for the best value

After an initial period where it may seem “quiet”, the pace will speed up, additional invoices will be presented, and momentum will build.  There may be periods of creative chaos as paint projects get underway, lighting fixtures are changed, furniture gets moved and people move swiftly about, inside your home.  This is all to be expected.

Additionally, there is no such thing as a trouble-free project.  Fabrics become discontinued, shipments get delayed or lost, sub-contractors find household “issues”, and numbers on orders get transposed.  When the inevitable occurs, and it will, your designer will expertly manage the resolution of these problems.  Count on your designer to help with critical decisions when the pressure is on and you are the busiest.

Finally, strive to suspend any judgment until the entire space is complete.   Remember that together, we are tackling a large-scale project with “a million working parts.”  It will all come together beautifully, with the end result appearing to have been achieved effortlessly.

You will enjoy your new space for many years to come!
